There's Something About Mobile

There’s something about mobile, but what is it? Here are a few observations:

It’s speedy. Like the infamous Ferris Bueller once said, “Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Mobile feels that way. Get on the high-speed bullet train, or you’ll be left behind. Sure, you can always take a quick look around and jump on at the next (mobile) platform, but do it now. This morning’s news is old news and yesterday’s new is really old news. That’s the news cycle of mobile. It’s hard to say if mobile technology moves at the speed of life, or if life moves at the speed of mobile technology. Maybe a little bit of both, reciprocating and reinforcing this pace.

It’s personal. The proliferation of customized content, applications and services make mobile a highly personal part of our day-to-day lives. We choose a mobile device that fits our needs, then we personalize it inside and out. After loading or snapping photos of your favorite people, places and things, your handset serves as a sharable album while on-the-go. We personalize our communications, setting preferences for the way we wish to receive information – driving directions via text message, prescription refill reminders by automated voicemail notification and newsletter subscriptions on mobile e-mail. However you like it, there’s a way to get it.

It’s our future. Today’s standard mantra before leaving the house: “Wallet. Keys. Phone. Ready to go!” Mobile is essential to the way we work, live and play. We’re accustomed to the convenience of having communication and information at hand, anytime and (almost) anywhere – depending on your network, of course! If you’re not already using a smart phone, you will. If you don’t dictate your text messages using speech recognition technology, you will. And if you don’t watch TV on your handset now, eventually you will. Mobile is here to stay, and it’s hard to imagine our future without it.

So, what is it about mobile? Mobile “gets” us. The kinds of devices, applications, services and content available to us today offer intuitive user experiences and genuine human connectivity. Mobile understands how to make our lives easier and more fun. Now, who wouldn’t want to be part of that?
