How PR Shapes What AI Says About Your Company
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews describe your company using what trusted sources say about you. News coverage, analyst mentions, expert quotes and well-structured web pages are the raw material for those answers. That means public relations now shapes AI search results as much as it shapes headlines.
When a buyer asks an AI tool "Who are the leading companies in satellite servicing?" or "What does Checkmarx do?", the answer is assembled in seconds from sources the model considers credible. If your company isn't in those sources, it isn't in the answer. If the sources are outdated, the answer is too.
The good news: the same disciplines that build a strong reputation also build AI visibility. Here is how SEO, AEO and GEO fit together, and what to do about it.
SEO vs. AEO vs. GEO: what's the difference?
SEO, AEO and GEO are three layers of the same goal: being found and trusted when someone searches for what you do.
SEO: search engine optimization
SEO makes your website easy for search engines to find, understand and rank.
• Goal: Rank in search results
• Where it shows up: Google and Bing results pages
• What it rewards: Relevant pages, links and technical health
• How you measure it: Rankings and organic traffic
AEO: answer engine optimization
AEO structures content so a search engine or voice assistant can lift a direct answer from it, usually from a question-and-answer format.
• Goal: Be the direct answer to a question
• Where it shows up: Featured snippets, voice assistants and "People also ask"
• What it rewards: Clear, concise answers to specific questions
• How you measure it: Snippet and voice-answer wins
GEO: generative engine optimization
GEO is the newest layer. It focuses on how large language models gather, weigh and summarize information about your brand, and it depends heavily on what reputable outside sources say.
• Goal: Be cited or described accurately in AI-generated answers
• Where it shows up: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overviews
• What it rewards: Credible third-party coverage and consistent facts across the web
• How you measure it: How often, and how accurately, AI tools mention you
Why AI engines rely on earned media
AI tools cite earned media far more than anything a company pays for. Muck Rack's May 2026 What Is AI Reading? study analyzed more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It found that earned media made up 84% of citations, while paid and advertorial content made up just 0.3% (Muck Rack announcement).
Journalism alone accounted for 27% of cited sources. When people asked about industry trends, AI cited news coverage in 46% of answers (National Newspaper Association summary).
The reason is trust. AI models are built to favor sources that are independent, current and consistent with each other. A reporter's story, an analyst's note or a respected trade publication carries more weight than a company's own claims. Your website still matters, because it supplies the facts AI checks against. But outside validation is what gets you named in the answer.
Five steps to show up in AI answers
1. Audit what AI says about you today. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude the questions your buyers ask: who leads your category, what your company does, how you compare with competitors. Note what's missing, outdated or wrong, and which sources each tool cites.
2. Earn coverage in the outlets AI trusts. Pitch the trade publications, business press and broadcast outlets that appear in those citations. One strong story in a respected outlet can keep feeding AI answers long after it runs.
3. Make your executives quotable experts. Bylines, podcast interviews, conference talks and award wins create a trail of third-party mentions. AI connects those mentions to your leaders and your company.
4. Answer questions directly on your own site. Lead each page section with a one-sentence answer, phrase headings as real questions and add an FAQ. Keep your company facts identical everywhere they appear, from your website to LinkedIn to press releases.
5. Add structured data and track results. Use Article, Organization and FAQPage schema so search and AI engines can read your content cleanly. Re-run your AI audit every quarter to see whether mentions and accuracy are improving.
How Global Results Communications helps
Global Results Communications (GRC) connects traditional PR with AI search visibility. For more than 20 years, we've helped companies in technology, healthcare, space and telecom earn the coverage that builds their reputation. Today that same coverage shapes what AI tools say about them.
Our work combines earned media, broadcast bookings, executive visibility, speaker programs, awards, analyst relations and AI search visibility (GEO). We audit how AI engines describe your company, find the gaps, and close them with stories in the outlets those engines trust.

Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization is the practice of improving how AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity find, describe and cite your company. It relies on credible third-party coverage, consistent facts and clear, well-structured content.
What is the difference between SEO and AEO?
SEO helps your pages rank in search results. AEO structures your content so search engines and voice assistants can pull a direct answer from it, such as a featured snippet.
Does PR help with AI search?
Yes. Muck Rack's May 2026 study found that 84% of the sources AI tools cite are earned media, such as journalism and research. Coverage you earn through PR is the main source AI uses to describe companies.
Can a company pay to appear in AI answers?
Not in organic AI answers. In the same study, paid and advertorial content made up only 0.3% of AI citations. Visibility in AI answers is earned through credible coverage.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
It depends on how much coverage a company already has. New earned coverage can be picked up by AI tools that search the web within weeks, while deeper changes build over several months of consistent PR.
How do I find out what AI says about my company?
Ask several AI tools the questions your customers ask and note which sources they cite. GRC runs this audit as part of its AI search visibility service.
